Horse Rescue in The Heart of LI Wine Country
Here, amidst the warm atmosphere and bucolic setting of Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard lied a horse haven unlike any other on Long Island. Since 2007, many horses whose lives were at risk, through love and dedication, found a second chance.
They not only found sanctuary, but were given the opportunity to become ambassadors, helping to educate the public about the need for legislation to protect horses.
The same patience and loving attention that goes into making wine at BHFV had gone into nurturing beautiful rescued horses back to health and exuberance.
In 2012, Baiting Hollow Farm Horse Rescue, Inc., was formed as a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization but regrettably it is being dissolved. Happily though our horses have been placed in loving homes. This has taken a good long while due to the careful screening of candidate owners.
This dissolution has been painful for us but was necessary due to our fruitless efforts to raise funding to help support the incredible costs incurred by us during these past 11 1/2 years. We frankly, can no longer afford to self-fund this operation so this is why we are forced to close it. However, our efforts do continue as you will read below.
Horse lovers of all ages throughout this period of 2007-2019 came to visit, take tours or just strolled outside our corrals to see certain of the horses who were generally out of their barn on nice weather days. Most of our horses were once marked for destruction so we are proud that we saved them and can say that they still lead safe and secure lives where they can better bond with a single owner.
Let Your Voice Be Heard – Stop The Slaughter
By reviewing the pages and pictures on the bhfhorserescue.org site, you can learn more about their cause and importantly, with no cost to you and only a few minutes of your time, you can navigate to the Take Action Now – Help Stop Horse Slaughter page where you can very simply copy a letter and paste it into an e-mail which you can then easily send to your two Senators. The letter requests that they support legislation to stop the slaughter of horses in this country (recently made legal) while making it illegal to transport horses to Mexican and Canadian slaughterhouses. Your voice can help save the lives of young, healthy and sweet-tempered horses that are sold at livestock auctions in the U.S., and either killed in American slaughterhouses or inhumanely killed every day across our borders. It only takes a few minutes of your time. Any donations you make shall not be used by us but will be immediately forwarded by us to select other horse rescues in the L.I. area as will be the case with the money we donate from the sale of certain select horse rescue wines which we sell (see below).
Enjoy Our Wine
Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard proudly features a selection of delicious wines which are dedicated to horse rescue. In fact, a portion of the profits from these wines are contributed to horse rescue efforts. These wines are available in BHFV’s Tasting House, in select restaurants and stores and in our online store (click here); Mirage, a delicious red blend, is named after an adored Arabian princess. It’s the perfect joining of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Angel is a slightly bold, partially stainless steel and oak-aged Chardonnay, dedicated to the horse that started it all back in 2007. She’s a beautiful Thoroughbred filly whose spirit touches everyone she meets. Savannah Rosé, made from our luscious and fruitful Cabernet Sauvignon grapes is named after an amazing Thoroughbred filly who was rescued in October of ’09 when she was only a year and a half. She and her half-sister Sienna are enjoying the good life on a huge estate in the Hamptons. While savoring this off-dry Rosé with its bright strawberry, raspberry, rhubarb-vanilla aromas and flavors, think of Savannah. Finally, there is Sweet Isis one wonderful dessert wine which is made from Riesling grapes. It commemorates a re-homed Egyptian Arabian who, along with her half-brother Sultan were former sanctuary residents of ours for countless years.
Donate now and/or purchase our horse rescue wines to help American Horses. They helped to build this country. We owe this effort to them.
